I like your approach to considering this album, given a dearth of facts around it and of the questions around it, well the clues are in its presentation as low key. Indeed, it was the first Prince record since Controversy which reached me as the item itself, not advance word about it. In the context of his new jazzy band, a mature development of the Parade tour style which would edge its way back into a soulful rather than psychedelic funk with Musicology and onward, it's a new century approach, new man, new faith, new interests. And, as you say, a proper album of the old school that is a journey to take. That is why we dont play it often why he didnt promote it like the others. It's got real girth and when you want it, it's got it. I think Last December and She Loves Me for Me are two of his major gems but as you say, pull them out as tracks and it's like you have somebody's foot without the body. As for what the album's about and all that discussion, I am lucky that when ut came to me I was offline and so was not privy to all the chatter. It had nothing I'd have noticed that was any more or less intriguing than any other of Prince's thematics, just that it was a new one. One thing I can say about this record above all else is that people who thought 'Yeah, great musician but I don't like pop music' were totally turned on to him with this. Time after time, converted. It's juicy.

I had just got my own copy of Sign O The Times having been listening to a housemate's when the store guy said 'His next one is out next week'. I thought he was joking but as it was closing time, he knew he was gonna blow my mind so shutting up shop, he put on the promo cassette which had come in. I mean, my jaw never closed throughout and he was falling about laughing at me. The following week he interrupts serving a queue of customers to come over and see me arriving in, saying 'You will not fucking believe this' with the news that they had to destroy the cassette. I didn't fucking believe him so it was another sore jaw day

Musicology was the second and final time that I saw Prince live. It was thunderous, rapturous, and just plain old lit.

Dude this is one of my favorite Prince albums. I really would like to see a deluxe. I personally love the sagues in the album. And I honestly wouldn’t mind if he just put the album on two discs like he did with Sign O’ The Times. I really feel like this albums needs more love, it’s very important to me. This, Xpectaition, and Parade are some of the most influential Prince albums to my music career. Any chance to make those albums better, I would take.

I think that releasing his music that wasn't done for 1 reason or another could hurt the legacy because we all know how maticulus that he was. I would love to hear new music from him but, as a musician, I understand about unfinished work. R.I.P. PRINCE. 💜💟💜🫶🏾✊🏾🙏🏾

This is wild!!!! Just some years back in the early 70s, the wailers including Bob use to perform in gay clubs all over America hence the song "midnight ravers". It got bad where Bunny Wailer quit the band just because of this. As soon as Bob became famous, he shits on a young prince calling him a batty man, not noticing all the women going crazy over him. I call it either hypocrisy or "Hate". He knew Prince was bout to shine

I believe when he said it was recorded in Paisley Park, he wasn't talking about a physical place. Remember Paisley Park is in your heart, and that's where he is insinuating the music originated from. I think he was being figurative not literal.

There is so much that should, and could be done for a definitive, purple rain box set. It is such a landmark album that it deserves the full treatment. It was such a fruitful period of creativity for prince that it deserves a total deep dive. Between proper master of the album, the singles, the edits, the extended mixes, and the B-Sides, there are plenty of great live shows they could include other than the Syracuse show. The original undubbed live tracks from first Avenue and the isolated overdub tracks would be great. Another super important thing to me would be to include all of the protégé material that is related with both the release versions, etc., as well as working tracks with prince guide vocals. A surroundsound and Atmos mix would be very welcome too. I would also like to see a documentary or audio treatment, similar to the John Lennon box set, that explored the multi tracks and how prince produced all of the independent elements that made up the record. I would imagine, though if we were going to get some thing this year, we would have already heard about it to coincide with the anniversary.

My fav is 3 chains o gold. Earlier in the phone call, Vanessa talks briefly about Prince's Opera ("Aww the Opera prince remarks"). That track comes across as an operetic style, with its different sections, movements and storyline. But yes to get the whole story we'd need the rest of the interview calls.

Fun Fact: my cousin was a dancer featured in the movie. He didn’t tell me until I saw him and he just laughed. He was a bit older than me.

i was 17 when this came out. i believe we had a late winter storm, and i walked 4 miles in the snow to get it. late March i believe. i listened to it so much that the cassette broke. it was still within reasonable time from when i bought it, less than a week, i walked another 4 miles back to the mall to get a new cassette with the receipt...

My favorite cut from the movie was not included on the album but instead released as a 12" version (Alexa De Paris) the B-side to 'Mountains' . The song is the instrumental long version of the movie dance scene w Prince and his love interest. Awesome instrumental jam!!!

I hope Jenkins will revise the draft script that has cancel culture elements to make it similar to the source material during workshops!!!!

I met Prince at a strip club, late one night. I told him I had found a 200+ page list online of unreleased albums and live sets. I wanted to know what they were and where I could find them. He told me they were bootlegs and NOT to buy them. I agreed but told him I really wanted to hear them, and would even pay just to hear them. He seemed intrigued. I told him there was a song on the list called, Crystal Ball, and I especially wanted to hear what that one was. His very next release was this! Not only did he put Crystal Ball on the release, he named the release after that song. He then also put "Bootleg" on each disc. That release was for me, and you can't convince me otherwise. 😊
